ABPI response to 100m vaccine pledge

The UK Government has pledged to donate at least 100 million surplus coronavirus vaccine doses within the next year, including 5 million beginning in the coming weeks.

Today’s commitment is an important step towards speeding up COVID-19 vaccination programmes around the world. Richard Torbett

In response, Richard Torbett, Chief Executive of the ABPI, said:

“Today’s commitment by the UK government to donate 100 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines is an important step towards speeding up COVID-19 vaccination programmes around the world. Pharmaceutical companies have also pledged 1.3 billion doses on a non-profit basis with developing countries.

“Vaccines need to get to as many people as possible as quickly as possible and dose sharing is a critical part of this. The pharmaceutical industry is on track to produce 11 billion doses in 2021 and it is vital that we work with all partners to make sure they are equitably distributed around the world."

A five step plan to maximise vaccine equity was published by the global pharmaceutical industry in May 2021.
