Government launches Statutory Scheme consultation

The Department of Health and Social Care has announced a consultation into the Statutory Scheme. This looks at amending the payment percentages in the Branded Health Service Medicines (Costs) Regulations 2018.

We have always said that the payment rate for the Statutory Scheme should be proportionate to the rate of growth in the branded medicines bill. That hasn’t changed since 2018 despite a declining growth rate, so this consultation is an opportunity to address that imbalance. David Watson

In response to the news, David Watson, Executive Director, Economic, Health & Commercial Policy, said:

“We have always said that the payment rate for the Statutory Scheme should be proportionate to the rate of growth in the branded medicines bill. That hasn’t changed since 2018 despite a declining growth rate, so this consultation is an opportunity to address that imbalance.”

As of January 2020 around 12 companies had moved into the Voluntary Scheme which, together with a package of different measures, is helping the NHS get the latest medicines in an affordable way. The Voluntary Scheme now covers around 90% of spend on branded medicines.
