ABPI response to Understanding Patient Data securing future funding

Understanding Patient Data (UPD) has played an influential role in the health policy landscape, communicating the views of patients and the public and championing the trustworthy use of health data.

It is important for patients and the public to have a trusted body that clearly explains the vital role health data plays in the development of new treatments, diagnostics and delivery of care. ABPI Director of Health Data and Digital Policy, Dr Janet Valentine said:

Funding for UPD was due to end this month, but this announcement sees further funding, a move to the NHS Confederation and a new programme of work which supports the implementation of NHS data infrastructure, policy and legislation.

Commenting on the announcement ABPI Director of Health Data and Digital Policy, Dr Janet Valentine said:

“It’s great to see this announcement of further funding for UPD has been secured and NHS Confederation will be UPD’s new host.

“It is important for patients and the public to have a trusted body that clearly explains the vital role health data plays in the development of new treatments, diagnostics and delivery of care. Equally as important is that the NHS, policy makers and research communities understand patient and public opinions on the use of health data in research.

“For many years, through advocacy and engagement, UPD has formed a communication bridge between patients and the public, and the providers and users of health data for research. This is a valuable service for everyone using and involved in the health service.

“Though there are plenty of challenges ahead for the emerging health data landscape and how researchers will interact with health data in the future, this good news brings an end to a period of uncertainty about UPD’s future and means UPD will continue to play a central role in influencing these developments.”
