Role summary

The Commercial Insight Analyst role is central to the ABPI’s evidence generation work to influence the commercial operating environment in the UK. This role will be responsible for ensuring that the ABPI team and members are abreast of the latest sector insights, informed by ongoing analytics and bespoke insight generation projects.

The role will focus on two areas, enabling an evidence-based approach to the ABPI’s value, access and uptake policy work:

  1. Ownership of ongoing analytics and insight generation, informing commercial policy work and delivery of the Voluntary (VPAG) and Statutory Schemes: Ensuring the ABPI and its members are abreast of the most up to date insights and analytics to inform policy generation, consultation responses and external communications. This will include utilising a wide range of existing data sources and developing / commissioning bespoke projects based on the evidence needs identified.
  2. Integration of the ABPI broader evidence generation work: Work with ABPI colleagues to bring together the key evidence across the organisation, so that we have a holistic view of the priority analysis impacting our sector. This includes all elements of the Life Sciences sector, including: economic contribution, investment, R&D, regulatory, access, uptake and supply.

Primary objectives/ responsibilities

  • Be responsible for providing ongoing analytic and insight delivery based on external data sources (IQVIA, NHS, ONS etc.) to understand branded medicine market trends. For example, how much the NHS spends on medicines each year, by how much is it growing or not, in which therapy areas and what is driving these trends

  • Staying abreast of the latest secondary data and evidence affecting UK Life Sciences and proactively feeding this into the ABPI and its member companies

  • Developing bespoke insight gathering programmes to gather evidence and using the outputs for a wide range of purposes. For example, generation of surveys or stakeholder interviews to plug evidence gaps where data does not currently exist

  • Manage the annual ABPI branded medicine forecast exercise, which provides an overview of UK spend on medicines out to the next 4-5 years, including agency management and coordinating input from companies and ABPI colleagues

  • Feed forecast outputs into payment rate scenario modelling for future VPAG years

  • Presentation of the above analytics, survey results and forecasts to a wide range of internal and external audiences, including senior management

  • Represent the ABPI in devoted cross government/industry working groups and collaborate with system colleagues to deliver metric and analytical work, where relevant (e.g. Innovation Scorecard, Life Science Competitiveness Indicators (LSCIs) metrics and EFPIA, the European Trade Association, Statistic working group)

  • Coordinate input from the ABPI and member companies to expand our sector-wide evidence base, in collaboration with colleagues from across the ABPI.

  • Work with public affairs colleagues to translate evidence into impactful messages and communications, understandable to a wide range of audiences, including the public.

  • Support the team in preparation for and attend member Groups and Committees, with senior attendance from ABPI member companies (Market Access, Pricing & Finance leads, General Managers)

Experience and skill set

  • Understanding of the UK pharmaceutical industry and healthcare systems. Specific economic, market access, pricing or health policy experience a plus

  • Experience in an analytical role in the NHS, government, pharmaceutical industry, market research / analytics agency, think tank or related stakeholder organisation.

  • High level of numeracy with strong knowledge of excel and ideally forecasting / scenario modelling. Other data visualisation software &/or programming expertise is a plus.

  • Able to communicate complex topics clearly in meetings, giving presentations to a range of audiences at different levels.

  • Successful experience of project management, working on a range of simultaneous responsibilities, meet deadlines and prioritise in a multi-functional environment.

  • Proactive and responsive. Enjoys working in a dynamic and exciting environment, with an aptitude for quick learning.
